A downloadable game

Knight of the Old Code is an action-platformer prototype inspired by NES/SNES classics. My goal for Finish Your Game Jam in this early build was to figure out enemies in this game and figure out some of the gameplay.  This is an unfinished demo, but if you can beat the Druid at the end of the last room, consider that a win for the Knight.

Controls

WASD/D-PAD:

Moves the Knight. Walking against a wall enables you to scale it. You can also cling beneath some platforms.

J / Square  / X:

Attack //

Your sword can deflect energy projectiles and damage most enemies. If an enemy can't be damaged by your sword, it requires stunning your enemy first.

K/ Cross  /  A:

Jump //

Sends the Knight into the air, pressing Jump again while in the air let's you use your double-jump. Your double-jump refreshes upon landing on the ground, or clinging to a wall. Shield Bandits can be stunned by bouncing on them. Bouncing refreshes the cooldown of the Astral Dash.

L/ R1 / RB:

Arcane Bullet// Calls on your friend to shoot blasts of magical energy. Damages most non-shield enemies from afar.

Space/L1/LB:

Astral Dash// Pushes you forward through the air, letting you keep your height. Refreshes upon bouncing on enemies and making contact with a surface.

I love the character and the design! The combat is very satisfying to get right though there is a steep learning curve on the controls. I would have preferred space to be jump, or at least the jump button to not be between the two attack buttons. But I'm sure it feels much better with a controller so take that with a grain of salt. One other thing that was difficult to get a hang of is how high the knight bounces after striking an enemy or jumping into a wall. I actually had some difficulty getting past the first ledge before realizing I could just climb up without jumping. Possibly changing up the level design in the very beginning could help players understand how they're meant to navigate with the knight. Otherwise very fun! And very challenging!

Thank you for playing it! And thank you for the feedback! Looking forward to working on those aspects, and I'm very glad you had fun.
